“Our” Chesapeake Bay

For a look at where we spend most of our time, here’s a segment of NOAA’s chart 12280 – Southern Chesapeake Bay.  A weekend or week-long cruise might be around Gwynn’s Island and south to Mobjack Bay–there’s a week’s worth of scenic anchorages up its creeks and rivers, alone!  Hampton Roads / Norfolk are about 50 NM from Stingray Point, a good day’s sail, or we might cross to the Eastern Shore.  Cape Charles and Onancock are among our favorite destinations on that side.  We hope to visit Occhohannock Creek in the spring.  Heading northwest around Stingray Point, the village of Irvington is a pleasant day’s sail up the Rapphannock with the town of Urbanna or the many anchorages of the Corrotoman just beyond.  And of course, crossing the mouth of the Rappahannock leads to another list of favorite destinations and overnight stops on the “Northern Neck.”  It’s interesting, fun, sometimes enlightening or even exciting, to cruise waters far away.  We always are reminded, though, of how blessed we are to call this area “home.”  We’ve seen nothing like cruising the Chesapeake!
